Gardening isn’t just for those living in a house. Apartment gardening is a way for apartment dwellers to get a nice flower garden without having a parcel of land. If the apartment has a deck, balcony or patio, that is the perfect place for a small garden. Even if you have only a few square feet to spare, you can create an attractive flower garden.

Outdoor apartment gardening means utilizing the space that you have to create the look of a garden. To begin this garden, you will need an assortment of containers that will fit the space you have as well as being the proper size for the plants you choose. For very small outdoor spaces, the plants can be tiered with some in hanging pots and some resting on benches and railings. This creates the depth of a more traditional flower garden but doesn’t overwhelm the space with too many flower pots on one level.

Some flowers can be ‘pot mates,’ planted in a container with other plants- but choose them carefully. Make sure to combine flowers that have similar growing needs. Also, be aware that some plants will grow long roots, and others will need a wide area for rooting. Make sure that pot mates are well suited for each other or one will likely take over the other.

Perennial flowers are a good choice for container gardening, as many perennials tend to do well in containers. Perennials are also a good choice because they will flower at different times during the year. Be sure to choose plants according to the sunlight they will receive. If your container garden area will not receive much full sun, choose plants that are shade tolerant.

When potting the flowers, it is best to choose a soil-less mix rather than real soil. When planting, the potting mix should be moist. Fill the pot three quarters full without packing it too firmly. Then add the flowers and more potting mix if needed. Avoid overfilling the pot - allow for at least an inch at the top for watering. Once the flower is potted, add water until water drains out the bottom.

Once your garden is in place, you should check the soil daily, watering until there is drainage. Your potted flowers will need more fertilizer than those planted in the ground, so be aware and fertilize your flowers regularly. Slow-release fertilizers are also available and are a good option if you do not wish to regularly fertilize. These pellets time themselves to release fertilizer to the plant over a period of months.

If you don’t have an outdoor area, an apartment garden can be created indoors. Pick a sunny spot inside for the pots, preferably near windows. A good choice for indoor apartment gardening is a baker’s rack. This allows several rows of flowers to be planted all in one compact area.
